TRUSTEE RECRUITMENT

As a specialist consultancy we are hugely passionate about the recruitment of modern, diverse, sustainable and successful boards. An effective trustee board is pivotal to the success of any charity and is integral in the generation of a high performing culture. Trustees hold responsibility for the overall strategy, governance, vision, and direction of a charity so it is imperative that you make the right selection and also identify someone who is the right fit culturally for your organisation.

Traditionally, many charities have relied on word of mouth referrals for trustee recruitment which often leads to a significant lack of diversity and skill sets within a board and ultimately poses a risk to a charity’s development. There are many factors which need to be considered when embarking on a trustee recruitment project. Here at Charity Horizons we have a multi stage process which will ensure the needs of the board are understood, the role is successfully packaged and marketed and ultimately the right candidate is identified for your trustee vacancy for long lasting success.

Please get in contact and ask to receive our trustee recruitment proposal which outlines how we will help you ensure the correct hire is made for your board.

BECOMING A TRUSTEE

Being a trustee is one of the most exciting and imperative roles within a charity and there are many benefits in taking on this important challenge. Whether you are already working within the sector and looking to diversify your knowledge or looking for an opportunity to make an inroad into the sector, this is an incredibly rewarding role. As a trustee you will:

  • Play a fundamental role in shaping the strategic development of an organisation and make a real difference to a cause in which you truly believe
  • Diversify your knowledge, have your thinking challenged and gain valuable strategic  experience within a leadership role
  • Give yourself an advantage when applying for senior level roles within a charity
  • Gain visibility and recognition both in and out of the sector
  • Develop your professional network, learn from your fellow trustees and gain an insight into how others respond and make decisions

Becoming a trustee is not something to be undertaken lightly and before embarking on this challenge you must consider both time commitments and legal obligations. Time commitments may vary according to the size of the charity and / or board however trustee boards must meet once a quarter as a minimum. To be a successful trustee you must not only be able to invest your time, but you must also be truly invested in the cause of the organisation so it is imperative you spend some time really thinking about the type of organisation that would best suit you. It is also important to understand the legal obligations of becoming a trustee. Boards are ultimately responsible for everything the charity does and the way in which it operates. They must also ensure all activities and actions are within, and accountable to, the law.
